Loving that body all year round

It’s that time of year again! An editorial summer-is-coming frenzy has taken over magazines, social sites, and everything in between- it’s all “get beach ready”  and “countdown to summer body” hysteria! The health and wellness market is saturated with cleanses, classes, retreats, and programs designed to get you “ready for summer,” so I have no remorse when I tell you that you’re not going to hear a word about any of that from ME. And I’m going to tell you why.

First of all, I don’t subscribe to the idea that you should only love your body in the summer. You should love it all the time!!!!! Taking care of our bodies is a year-round gig, my friend, and it requires constant care and attention, every single day. Yes, we work ourselves up about putting on a bathing suit because it tells the truth, in public, about our bodies. It’s vulnerable exposure. But wouldn’t it be nice to just be proud of our bodies all the time, so if we had to throw on a suit, it wouldn’t throw us into self loathing?

Second of all, we have bigger fish to fry than fit into your branded #baewatch suit! I’m not going to assume that you work out because you despise your body. If you show up to class because you want to lose weight and tighten things up, I’m all for it! However, there’s always a greater reason why. Even saying you want to be bikini-ready is the surface reason to what you REALLY want. Why is it so important to you? What will you get from it? Who will you impress? How will it make you feel? Those are the real reasons. Let’s break it down together. Maybe you’re there to improve your stamina or take a nice break in the day from your job or kids. Or you’re cross training for a marathon. Maybe you’re there for a million reasons. But let’s be real about what those reasons are.

Third, getting the body you love involves a lot more than a few curated sweat sessions clustered close to Memorial Day. It involves discipline- not just in the studio but at the fridge and the bar too. It involves making a habit out of body love. It involves willpower, strength, gracious self talk, forgiveness, courage. I hate to tell you (and MAN do I wish there was), but THERE IS NO QUICK FIX TO HAVING A BODY YOU LOVE. You have to dive deep, and you have to do it on the daily.

THIS is what we need to work on in class (book a bike with me here or work out online with me here). We need to tell ourselves the truth, set goals and intentions, and visualize ultimate success! We do this by getting uncomfortable, feeling all of the insecurity and perceived weakness, and saying “Not today. Today is my breakthrough.” All of our struggles are meant to be overcome.

I don’t care what you look like in a bathing suit. I care how you FEEL in your body. I care if you’re proud of yourself (and not just at the beginning of June)!!! So TAKE ACTION NOW: pull out a pen or copy and paste this into a blank doc, and ask yourself the following questions to get you started on loving who you are on the outside:

  • Does your appearance on the outside match who you are on the inside?
  • If not, why not? What isn’t matching?
  • If something doesn’t match, what is holding you back from fixing it?
  • What needs to happen to eliminate that obstacle?
  • What do you need to do to make that happening happen?
  • Can you do it?
  • Will you do it?

What do you think? Are you up to loving your body all year round? It’s empowering. It’s work. It’s a struggle. And it’s TOTALLY WORTH IT. Let me know how I can support you.
